Section C2: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Accreditation Application Checklist - Family & Divorce Mediation applicants ONLY
Where a mediator was trained under a training program that is not accredited by the Board (NABFAM) the mediator may obtain accreditation through one of the following ways:
a) Undergo training under an accredited training program (see section C1); or
b) Apply to a member organization for recognition of prior learning.
bi) Each such application must be accompanied with full details of training and experience.
bii) The member organisation will nominate an accredited assessor to assess the applicant
biii) The assessment will consist of:
(1) a written component that tests the applicant’s understanding of mediation theory; and
(2) an assessment of the applicant’s skills as mediator in an actual mediation or an applicable role play
(3) When assessing an applicant, the assessor must certify a trainee as being of competent standard, or if this is not the case, recommend additional training and practice, and re-assessment at a later date
Each such application will be considered on its own merits. Any decision that an applicant is required to undergo additional training in order to qualify for accreditation shall be final.

Section C3: Recognition of Prior Experience (RPE)

Accreditation Application Checklist - Family & Divorce Mediation applicants ONLY
In exceptional circumstances, experienced mediators who are acknowledged by the member organisation as such, may be accredited on the basis of their experience in mediation practice without having to first complete an accredited training program.
A person wishing to qualify on this basis shall apply to a member organisation for recognition of prior experience.
i) Each such application must be accompanied with full details of experience.
ii) The member organisation will consider the application, and if satisfied of the applicant’s competency, recommend to the Board that the person be accredited
iii) The Board will consider such application and recommendation and must then assess and certify the applicant as being competent, or if not of this opinion, recommend what additional training and practice need to be taken to acquire accreditation
Each such application will be considered on its own merits. Any decision that an applicant is required to undergo additional training in order to qualify for accreditation shall be final.

Section D: Fees and Payment

Membership Fees:

The annual membership fee is R 500.00 which covers administration costs, newsletters and reduced fees at lectures, conferences and seminars. The annual SAAM membership fee runs from March to March each year. You will receive a pro-rata invoice from application date to March the following year.

First Time Accreditation Fees:

The first-time accreditation fee for Family & Divorce Mediation is R 700.00 which covers NABFAM registration fee and SAAM administration fees. This fee is non-refundable.

Accreditation Renewal Fees:

The annual accreditation renewal fee is R 200.00 which covers NABFAM registration fee and SAAM administration fees. This fee is non-refundable.

DiSAC Recognition Fees:

First time application fee is R 300.00 which covers administration fee and adding your details to the SAAM Website. This fee is non-refundable. Renewal fee is R 200.00 which covers administration fee and adding your details to the SAAM Website. This fee is non-refundable.
